DVD codecs / playback
Usually, anytime I've installed Power DVD on a box, DVD playback always worked. I've also noticed that, not until the Power DVD is installed, do you have the option to use WMP to playback a DVD, (like WMP is using that codec from the Cyberlink software).
So I had a 12x Hitachi DVD-ROM that I gave to my Dad. Installed the Cyberlink software, but when I would put in a commercial DVD, an error would show up to the effect that the "format not recognized".
I noticed that looking in Device Mangler, on other boxes, I would see the MPEG-2(?) codec listed. I don't see it listed on this PC, which is a Win98SE box, with a Voodoo2000 vid card.
Where do the codecs come from? Mustn't be from MS, because, as stated above, you have no DVD playback options using WMP9 alone.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. (And I hope you and your families had a very Merry Christmas this year).
