You might find the Digital camera buying guide (from CNET) helpful!

As for something at the price you mentioned... I can't pin down anything specific. I bought a Kodak CX4300 (at 3.2mp) for $140, and I like it just fine. However, I'm not picky. The quality is more than I ever need for what I do with it. Consider what you really want out of a camera before you buy one.

1.3 is on the low end of resolution.

My Kodak I bought 5 years ago was 1 megapixel.

On today's standards you should be looking for something in the minimum range of 3.0 megapixels.

I just bought a Canon A70 at 3.2 megapixels.

Good camera BTW.

I'd go in rpertusio's direction with the Kodak... I wasn't even aware that you could get a 3.2mp camera at that price.

2+ megapixels is generally the norm... Depends on what you're doing with it. If quality really isn't crucial, and you'll just be using the photos for email and such, 1.3mp may suffice.

well i heared the rule of thumb is that the 1 megapixel range is good for internet pics and printing up to 4x6 (with a photo printer). 2 megapixel range is good for up to 5x7 printing and 3 megapixel range is good for up to 8x11 printing and some zoom in and inlargeing of the picture to be printed with minimal distortion 4-5-6ect..mp allows for more to zoom in and inlarging of photos taken with less distortion of the pic

i have both a 1.3 mp and a 3.2mp cameras and the 1.3 prints great 4x6 but ok 5x7, my 3.2 prints great full page prints

hint* if lookin for a camera IMO look for one with removable memory so that you can upgrade and do your research, shop around

Not bad, but you are going to need a better memory card than that, 7mb isn't going to give you much room to work with unless you are close to your PC alot when you take photos...so add in the cost of an SD card.

I'm looking at the Kyocera Finecame L3V myself....the colors are really good, the movie mode has sound and is crisp, has expandable memory and it has a cool light strip in the front of the camera that flashes on to let people know when the camera is going to take the picture.

I could get an Argus 5mp camera from Micro Center for 159 after rebate, but it's horribly slow ( 7sec start up ), the picture quality has a little noise, the movie mode is horrible and I don't need to take pictures at 2000 x 2000 resolution ( approx. )

If this is going to be your first camera, then I think it would be a good buy for the price...you probably don't need a bunch of extra features like adjustable shutter speeds, etc. If you find that you like using digital and want to upgrade, then you've got a nice cheapy camera sitting around to use whenever, and then can buy a better one for more important picture taking occasions
