Suse 9.0 Professional

On Friday when I get money and stuff from Christmas, I'm going to buy a AMD 2500+ and a motherboard so I can build a new server and something to mess around with Linux on. I'm thinking about getting Suse 9.0 professional but it is a hefty 80 bucks. Should I go with Suse since I don't really know anything about Linux or Redhat or Mandrake. Also, are their Linux drivers for 5200 video card? One last thing, can I download 9.0 professional for free or only personal?

I've done some research on it and I'm starting to like it and want to try it out. Also, is there any need for a floppy drive in this computer? I currently don't have any

You can get SuSE 9.0 pro for $64.99 at Amazon. You can also get the SuSE 9.0 pro update for $49.88 at Amazon. The difference is that the update doesn't come with the manual. Also, the update doesn't need a prior install of SuSE to work. You can find almost any information you need about Linux on the web. Just ask here at Techimo or one of the Linux user groups.

If you have a broadband connection, Mandrake or Fedora are good to start off learning Linux with. You can download the 3 install ISOs for free.

Last of all, if you don't have broadband, you could go to www.cheapbytes.com and pick up the 3 install CDs for almost any Linux distro for under $10.

OBTW, I run SuSE 9.0 and love it.

Well, I'm pretty sure you can only download Suse 9.0 personal for free, not the Professional one. So the only difference is that the non-update comes with a manual and the update doesn't. Is it missing any extra software or anything? I have a broadband connection and I may try downloading Mandrake or Fedora. According to some reviews on Suse 9.0 it's good for both Linux experts and even noobs.

Also, do I need Windows already installed to use Suse?

Definitly go with SuSE 9.0 Pro! Buy the update version since you will not need the manual because it comes in pdf format with the update version. Mandrake is another good distro. I have heard mixed reviews about the newest release of Mandrake though.

You do not need Windows to run SuSE or any other Linux distro.

I'm hoping Fry's has the Update because on their sister website it only has Pro and Personal and I need to go their anyways to get my CPU and Mobo for the server.

Yeah, you can only download the "live eval" cd of SuSE for free. Or you can do a network FTP install of SuSE for free if you can figure it out. Not recomended for someone just beginning.

SuSE download link

And also to answer your question, no software is missing from the update. It's just doesn't have the manual.

SuSE is great for noobs. So is Mandrake.

OBTW, those are cunokyle's links from another site that we both belong to. Hey cunokyle!

There are a few differences between SUSE 9.0 personal, and what you get with SUSE Linux 9 free version, however they aren't too significant, but I do suggest SUSE as well.
I'm using SUSE Linux 9 Professional myself and am liking it very much

If you can get their personal edition it is good too...it just does not come with all of the extra programs that pro comes with. And it is quite a bit cheaper.
