slow portfolio

I have a network with two computers. I have an Etrade account and for the last two months it is slow to bring on my screen. For instance when I click on Etrade it takes about 40 sec to come and ask for password and then will take about 40sec to go to selections another 40 sec to access my portfolio. This is the primary comp on network. It is a XP. I can switch to the other comp which is a 98 and it goes at normal speed. What am I doing wrong.

Is anything else slower on the xp machine? Like accesing other web pages or stuff?

How much memory does the xp machine have?

XP have firewall on?

One thing you could try is to turn off some of the unneeded "services" that are running on the xp machine. go to www.blackviper.com and check out his "xp services configurations"....I usually use the "safe" one with a few small exceptions....but if you check that out you see that XP has a lot of "bloat" running that you dont need....junk like "smart card helper, portable media serial number, alerter, messenger" etc etc.

np. Some of those services are "interactive" and you can click on the "dependency" tab after you run "services.msc" to see what other services depend on the one you might shut down etc. But by shutting down the junk stuff you can free up some resources and gain back a little speed.

I sell some Dell Dimensions sometimes and Ill give you an example of what this can do.

I had a 2ghz Celeron with 256m ram..ok, not a powerhouse setup but ok for general use....I had done the configurations from blackviper etc.

Ok, I got a new Dell P4 2.2ghz with only 128m ram and of course when its fresh from Dell like that it doesnt have any of these configurations done.

The P4 was a total doggggggggggggg, super slowwwwwwwwwww...of course the 128ram was the main thing and I added another 128 right away.....but turning off the unneeded services also helped out.
