Counter Strike... but why?

I'm part of a group of guys that get together monthly and play games together over a lan. This past month I asked everyone what they wanted to play. Several guys wanted to play Counter Strike.

So I get my hands on the game and install it to see why so many people want to play it.

After playing for a few minutes it became very clear that there are about 100 other first person shooters out there that are tons better than Counter Strike.

So what is the attraction to the game? I'm sure it was great for it's time but it's time has come and gone.

I think the same way, I played it for a couple weeks over the summer and didn't think too big of it it. I kind of like Day of Defeat a WWII mod but even that is a little graphically outdated. I'm sure BF1942 is better and I'm awating to play CoD. I think the main reason people play it is because so many of their friends do.

Yea thats what I keep wondering as well, I always thought CS and half life sucked. Oh well, glad im not the only one on earth

i dunno what u guys are talking about i ONLY play counterstrike, i think the reason why people like it so much is because of the fact that u can always get better and theres always someone out there thats better than u. also for me one big reason that i play is because of the ranking system some servers have, i like to be up there in the top 15 for bragging rights i gues, also i have to much spare time and thats what i do during it

The only good thing about that game is the fact that my crappy lapdance with the PIII 500mhz and no 3d video will still play it. But lots of guys with good PCs still want to play CS?

CoD beats Counter Strike hands down.

There is always someone better than you at every game you try. No matter how good you get there is always someone better. This applies to all games, not just counter strike.

And the servers that track your ranking? Well there are a lot of servers that do that for other games also. I know for a fact that people keep stats for MOHAA and BHD.

Almost anygame you can track your stats if the server enabled it.

I don't care for CS but try America's Army. It's a great game and there is a free stats server if you sign up. It is much more of a team oriented game than the others.

the main reason i started playing counter strike was because i could run it on my old voodoo3 2000 and still get decent frame rates. Also, its just so widely known.... if you are lookin for a mod to half life, the first one you will hear is counter strike. Also, its different than your typical frag it up (quake3 etc) and is a lot more team oriented. So at the time it was one of the only other team based fps (i know there was rainbow six and such) basically, its just been there for so long its become a classic, so y not play it?

I don't play CS much anymore but I used to. Sure there are many other FPS out there with more to do but CS has cool weapons IMO.
