Portable HDD?
Now this may seem a little stupid, but...

I have an idea. I have a small HDD thats currently inside my PC. It's a small HDD and I don't have anything on it. I have also found a box full of USB cables and all that. I thinking of throwing them out.. But, since the cables carry their own power from the PC, could I create a "portable storage device" by sticking a USB cable on the HDD? I know what each of the wires on the USB cable mean:

red: VCC (5 volt, max. 100mA/500mA)
black: Ground
white: D0-
green: D0+
[shield]

... I am just not sure about the IDE cable.

Is this possible?

why not just get an external hd enclosure? I guess its the same idea as yours

the thing is there has to be something inbetween the usb cable and the harddrive.

yeah, the whole ide to usb interface thing will be the trick.

Maybe experiment a little first with stuff like usb "flashlights" and stuff like that
