xp2400 v. xp2500 overclocking

I'm new to the forum so bare with me. I've followed a couple of threads that have talked almost exclusively about the xp2500 and its overclocking capabilities, but I've never seen such a discussion on the xp2400. I've read several reviews and seen numerous benchmark test where they have all concluded that the xp2400 surpasses the xp2500 and the xp2600 and Dollar for Dollar its the best cpu you can buy for a gaming system. Stable overclocked with ease to 2.3 ghz and many claim 3.0 ghz.

I'm buying a biostar m7ncd and plan on putting in a xp2400 (allows multipliers to be reset through a program that biostar provides).

So my question is..........why so much use of xp2500 by gamers instead of the xp2400?

Because the XP2500+ Barton has higher FSB at 333MHz, and double the L2 cache of an XP2400+, thats a 512KB cache ..

BTW, i have XP2400+ at the moment and i like it .. mildly OCed at 140MHz FSB, it stays pretty cool at 36C full load ...

I have a XP2400+ Oced to 2.19 by slight increase in fsb and multiplyer. It's pretty stable there but I can't get it above 2.2 without losing stability.

A large part of overclocking relies on your MB so be sure people are getting the speeds you want with that MB and processor you are about to purchase.

Thanks for the welcome and the input. From the reviews and benchmarks I've seen, on several different boards, the conclusions were that the increase in cache and fsb increase were pretty much a failure. That the xp2400 beat the xp2500 rather handily.

Thanks again. It's nice to hear that you are happy with your xp2400. I guess I'm just trying to figure out if I'm missing something in the data. The cost savings and overclocking capabilities are what I'm mainly looking at. Trying to build a machine at as reasonable a cost as possible without sacraficing power.

I do a lot of vob to mpeg2 compression and my son wants something to do gaming on. So far I think I'm heading in the right direction.

The previous reply gave a link for the setup to get it running at 2.3 ghz. Here is a link where it was tested and claimed to be stable at 2.5 ghz which is equivilant to a xp3000+.

I've got to filter through my files and find one that stated 3.0 ghz

I really didnt want to stress the claim for 3.0 ghz because I remember it being on a personal web page with no real setup or documentation.

I can't look at that sight because it's filtered here at work. I'll check it out when I get home but I think I'm stuck where I am because I can't increase the voltage with my mobo.

I didn't know anything about overclocking when I got my current gear and now I'm stuck with it.

However if I were to build a PC today for overclocking I would use the Asus A7N8X Deluxe and the 2500+. I know of several people who are getting 3200+ speeds with that setup.

Mind you I'm trying to build the most buget minded machine that will get the job done. I set my target price at $600 USD based on a machine at $1000 (USD). I got my Powmax 80A 400 watt case this week.

Let me know if you get a chance to look at the two boards side by side and let me know how you think they compare. I'ts always good to have some fresh eyes look at it and maybe see if I'm missing something.

Sorry but AMD processors will not reach 3GHz without some very serious cooling going on. Clock for clock, the 2400+ can reach or even exceed the 2500+, but as was already pointed out, the 2500+ not only operates at a higher bus speed, but has twice the cache. The 2400+ will have to be clocked CONSIDERABLY higher than the 2500+ to overcome the advantages of the 2500+.
