2800 should do plenty fine for anything you want to do (gaming, surfing, typing, etc.) I really dont think it is worth the extra money to get the 3000. The advantages gained do not weigh heavy enough to justify spending the extra money. Get the 2800 barton.

Even a 2500 is more than enough for today's applications/games so i'd just get the barton.

Barton is, of course, and awesome processor...BUT..I am hearing great things about the 64..

Here's what I would do...get the barton...wait for the bugs to get worked out of the 64's...and for the price to go down...

More motherboards for it will be more available as well...

the athlon 64 3000 is just about to hit the streets and is 1/2 the price of the top of the line pentium 4 (3.2ghz) and roughly the same scores in many benchmarks. i would look into that if you have any plans on buying cpu/mobo upgrades anytime soon.

The Athlon 64 3200 is even out...the only difference between that and the 3000 is that the 3200 has 1mb cache whereas the 3000 only has 512k cache. If you've got money go for the AMD 64...that's what I'm about to do....I think I'm going to go for the AMD 64 3200.
