Reinstalling drivers
Thought I would throw this one out and see what comes back. The situation is that I install and maintain server systems on customer sites that run proprietary software, and that interface with specialized equipment. We have many clients in the field that run everything from Windows 95 to XP. There are times when a workstation just craps out and will not successfully interact with the system. Many times we have to completely rebuild the disks starting with a format and clean installation. The next step is to get the WS back onto the network so that we can map the drives and reestablish database connectivity. There are a number of different configurations including a vast array of old NIC’s, capture cards and video cards. Normally when we have to reinstall, it takes forever and a day to track down all the device drivers. The question is, does anyone have some suggestions as to the best and most efficient way to store all of the WS existing drivers onto CD before the reformat, and that way when the reinstalled OS locates the devices we can simply point the wizard to the CD with the drivers? The issue is that no one maintains the original CD’s with the original drivers and getting them from the Internet is hit and miss. There is virtually no way to have them all ahead of time because the different combinations are too vast. The whole process can take hours and I am looking to increase efficiency.
