Reinstalling drivers

Thought I would throw this one out and see what comes back. The situation is that I install and maintain server systems on customer sites that run proprietary software, and that interface with specialized equipment. We have many clients in the field that run everything from Windows 95 to XP. There are times when a workstation just craps out and will not successfully interact with the system. Many times we have to completely rebuild the disks starting with a format and clean installation. The next step is to get the WS back onto the network so that we can map the drives and reestablish database connectivity. There are a number of different configurations including a vast array of old NIC’s, capture cards and video cards. Normally when we have to reinstall, it takes forever and a day to track down all the device drivers. The question is, does anyone have some suggestions as to the best and most efficient way to store all of the WS existing drivers onto CD before the reformat, and that way when the reinstalled OS locates the devices we can simply point the wizard to the CD with the drivers? The issue is that no one maintains the original CD’s with the original drivers and getting them from the Internet is hit and miss. There is virtually no way to have them all ahead of time because the different combinations are too vast. The whole process can take hours and I am looking to increase efficiency.

Somewhere.. on one of the forums I visit.. I have seen a link to some utility that scans the system and locates all drivers. What the utility does with the info it has collected, I have no idea.. not needing the utility, I passed it up. It may have located and had the capacity to place a copy in some folder for archiving.. I simply do not know..but if so, it would be perfect for what you need.

I will do a search (but what search term?) and see if I can locate the link.

I did fing autility on CNET called "“Driver Guide Toolkit” developed by a vendor named JerMar. It supposedly scans the system and then saves all the drivers to a location (such as c:\my drivers). I ran it on an XP machine and it definitely isolated all the drivers and made an archive. It has a whopping 2-day trial then I get to see if it just nags me forever or I actually do have to purchase it. What I will probably do is backup a Win98 machine, then nuke some drivers and see if I can restore from the JerMar disk. I was hoping that someone had a trick up there sleeve to do it all without the use of third party shareware. If you get a hold of that other utility I would like to try it out. Thanks.

4WIW- When I do a configuration/build i create a seperate folder with that machines drivers. I keep one copy clearly labeled by machine SN# and location on my server and the other copy becomes a sub-folder of sys...32/drivers. This becomes my archival library. Luckily no system/machine mods are made without me getting a new copy of the driver folder. Works for me as there is no hunting for the d!@# install disk/cd.

there are driver backup utilities....I asked this same question once cuz we rebuilt a ladies machine once..she had an old #9 vid card and at the time I could NOT find a driver..period...so we had to sell her a vid card..(sorta embarrassing).

But I would consider this personally....why not build the machine....get the drivers on it..then ghost it right there with Norton Ghost...just the base configuration.....then add all your mapped drives etc etc. That way if it got snookered again you could just zip bam boom restore it from your ghost image and instead of hrs it would be like 7 minutes, lol.
