Kids putting Arctic Silver 3 on a new Barton

Hey folks,

Seen the instructions on the AS website and thumbed through some of the posts on this forum, but still have a question:

How much and where on the rectangular shaped core do I put a (transferred) dab on A.S. 3? One grain of rice or two? Do you smooth it out to make it transparently even over the core or just a grain equivalent or two and set down the heatsink. (7+)

Do you still apply and rub in and remove excess of A.S. 3 on the heatsink (I used 91% rubbing alcohol to clean the copper base of the heatsink). e.g. tint the heatsink base?

Do you leave on the four round dots on the CPU?

Not using a shim because the one I have ain't compatible with Barton core

i clean the die and heatsink first . then put a dab ( dab = 1/4 of a grain of rice ,and even that might be to much , you can always put more on if you need . but if you start with to much it is hard to get excess off so start with very little ) on the die and spread it out so that it is even and THIN corvering the top of the die ONLY ( the die is the rasied silver square or rectangle in the center of the cpu ) . VERY THIN is the key , almost seethru . other say about the thickness of a sheet of paper but that is to thick in my book , but it gives you an idea of how THIN you want it .use a creditcard, straight piece of plactic , or anything that is hard (but WON'T scratch the die ) and has a straight edge on it to spread it out even and over the complete top of the die . the words to remember is EVEN and THIN and COMPLETE TOP OF THE DIE .

you have to remember there is VERY little space between the die and the heatsink so all the excess will be puched out and sit around the edge of the die . heatsink paste is made to help pull heat off the die and transfer it to the heatsink . well if it is built up on the edge of the heatsink it will transfer the heat there but it will have noplace to go so it will hold the heat . thats not good .

Do you still apply and rub in and remove excess of A.S. 3 on the heatsink (I used 91% rubbing alcohol to clean the copper base of the heatsink). e.g. tint the heatsink base?

this is yes and no . yes rub some on the die and wipe it off . so that is ''GHOSTS" the bottom of the heatsink . but wipe it clean with a clean dry lintfree cloth . i wouldn't use alcohol to remove the excess thermal paste . you don't have to do the whole bottom of the heatsink . just the area that will be touching the die . so a space about the size of a nickle will be anuff . what i do is use a plastic sandwich bag as like a glove , wipe the excess of the paste off the straight edge that i used to spread the paste on the die and rub it on the heatsink in a circular motion . if there is alot on the bottom of the heatsink i wipe it clean with lintfree rag . so yes clean the bottom of the heatsink with alcohol first but i don't clean it with alcohol after you "tint" or ''ghost'' the bottom of the heatsink .

Do you leave on the four round dots on the CPU?

YES DON'T REMOVE THESE . you say your not useing a shim . well these work just like a shim and support the outter edge of the heatsink on the cpu , and keep the heatsink level on the die . so DON'T REMOVE THESE 4 DOTS ...... also DON'T put any thermal paste on them either .

hope this helps

No problem.

And try not to get swallowed up by the earth today.

Yikes.

Glad you still got power.

I put whatever comes out. Usually way too much. Then I go over it with a razor a couple times till its even.

Can't wait to get out of those new 64s. No more messing around with the core.

great minds must think alike, Omar.

I also use a plastic sandwich bag to spread the paste on the HS. only difference between your method & mine is that i use the tong of a plastic fork when coating the core.

what's the deal with the heat-spreaders now on the xeons and opterons??? do we still need to put thermal paste on these babies? i don't think it would hurt to put paste on but you'd wind up using at least half a tube on each chip!

your thoughts?

hopefully that will mean the cpu will be able to cool better.

Artic Ceramique...

Artic Ceramique works just as well..in some cases slightly better..than the AS-3..AND...best of all..it's non-conductive like the AS-3..so almost impossible to short out your processor and lose all warranty...

Here's a link to see a side by side comparison...
