Shutdown doesn't switch off PC

Howdy...

Another problem i've encountered with my brothers PC (has been doing it since the format but has just been on the backburner cuz its not that important really).

When i shut down the PC in win2k, instead of turning of the PC like it normally would, it shows the message saying it is now safe to turn off the PC....

Now i realise this is probably a VERY simple problem... But yeh every PC i've setup has automatically powered off when i shut down... So i'm not exactly sure where to look for a fix to this...

PC has a fresh install of win2k with SP4 and latest patches. I flashed the mobo bios to the latest version also before the format... Is there something in there that maybe could be effecting this?

Any idea's greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

go to Control Panel's Power Options, and under the APM tab checked to enable Advanced Power Management support

see if that works

I'm not sure how old the computer is, but does it support and have acpi enabled in the bios and in the computer management under device manager, when clicking the + next to computer, does it show up acpi was installed or was it another hal or standard pc?
If standard PC then acpi would be disabled in windows, I don't believe you can change back from standard pc to acpi.

lol i've been here how many years... and i forget to post system specs!

PC was built about 2 yrs ago... 1.1Ghz tbird, msi K7t Turbo mobo etc...

It does support the auto off cuz it used to do it with 98 before i formated & updated the bios...

Hmm in dev mananger, under computer its showing as "standard PC"....

Herm... the bios flash musta not enabled ACPI by default... Does this mean i gotta reinstall windows after updated the bios??? ARGH! i just finished installing everything....

So yeh... anyone know if its possible to change from standard PC to ACPI?

Ok, i've rebooted... SOft Off for the power button was already set.

Plug N Play OS was set to NO (which is why ACPI wasn't enabled, doh!).

BUT THE GOOD NEWS... Turning on APM in the windows Power Settings makes the PC turn off when it shutsdown. yay!

Now my next question... Will there be any problems by having it as a "standard PC" rather than acpi enabled? Whats the difference?
