Windows explorer opens at Startup

In the spirit of the holidays I offered to assist my friend resolve what I thought was a simple Win2k problem on his Dell Inspiron Notebook.

The problem is that on startup the Windows Explorer opens with the contents of system32 displayed.

I confess that cannot find what is wrong so I ask for suggestions.

Here is what I did:

1. Added a new user. The Windows Explorer still opened at startup.

2. Looked ar run within the registry. I found nothing strange here.
Also looked at winnt's winlogon. Again nothing strange.

3. Checked autoexec.bat, win.ini, system.ini. Found nothing.

4. Looked at local and group policies. Found nothing.

5. Thought maybe Win2k wasn't saving the settings so I moved icons around the desktop and re-booted. The moved icons displayed correctly.

I can replicate the problem by running userinit from the run command except here I get My Documents whereas where I run startup I get system32. This makes sense to me because it probably shows the last folder referenced.

I don't know where userinit gets its info or even if userinit is the culprit so I need help.

Thanks and Happy Holidays

I have that same type of problem on my old "main" comp..which was WinME...it started right after I installed somethign but I cant remember what....maybe after I partitioned into 3 partitions with Partition Magic.

But it doesnt do it everytime, just once in a while...it will open up a window as if I had clicked on one of the partitions in "my computer". Sometimes its one partition, sometimes a window for all 3, lol.

One thing you could try, if nothing else just for future convenience...is a cool little program to substitute for "msconfig" which isnt on Win2k is Startup control panel ...its really cool and it shows more thigns than msconfig does anyway...POSSIBLY it could help you find the issue.

Also I wonder if you could try a "bootlogged" startup. (I think thats what its called). ...where it makes the bootlog.txt file showing all the stuff starting etc....maybe some clues there.

JP

Thanks for the info.

I will certainly try the Startup Control Panel Program and turn on bootlogging.

I found the answer in an obscure technote on support.microsoft.com. The problem was a null (no value) in the REG portion of one the lines in hklm/software/microsoft/current version/run. Remove the line and no more problem.

Thanks everyone for your help.
