first make sure you have an adequate HSF combo

that depends on how much you want to go up. i went up about 133mhz and ran for a couple days just fine on the same thing, with a -newer- retail AMD HSF. though i dont recommend it...I was just playing around when i did it. (i was watching it closely aswell)

You can see what others have gotten with your particular CPU in the following database: http://www.cpudatabase.com/CPUdb/index.cfm
Many entries will also post the cooling methods they employed.

Overclocking

Always be very careful when overclocking.
First of all, realise that u'll void the warranty on many, if not all of your components.

Damage can result to your hardware. However, by taking appropriate precautions and doing it incrementally, the risk is greatly reduced

try www.ocarena.com for a start.

Hope this helps

first things first, is your Athlon XP a palomino or thorougbred? a palomino core athlon isn't so friendly in overclocking. you can increase the fsb but not that high. the t-breds overclock really good and stable.

second, increasing your mobo FSB simultaeously increase the PCI and AGP frequencies. make sure you stay close to 33 MHz PCI and 66MHz AGP frequencies or else you get unstable system.

third, make sure your system is properly cooled if you intend to
overclock.

my 1001th post!

The cooling only really becomes a problem when you start boosting the voltage.
It does depend heavily on the CPU you have;
Is it a tbred or palli?
is it unlocked? (some chips were)
Finally, be aware that a significant proportion of chips in that database are clearly not at that speed. Looking just now I saw:

3000 180. JIUHB0308 Asus A7V333 Thermaltake Volcano 7+
There's no way in hell you could get a 1700+ Tbred B up to 3000mhz on 1.8v Much less with a volcano 7 lol.
