The A64 3000+ is definitely a good buy, clocking in at the same 2GHz as the 3200+ but with less cache has minimal impact on performance on *most* benchmarks (3200 is mainly faster in gaming benchmarks)

I would say the 3000+ is the betta buy out of the two (especially on a limited budget)

Ummmmmmmm...............well i myself am gettin the 3000+ its a great card. My friend has the 2400+ and says it's flaless sry if that's spelled wrong. If you don't have enough money then go for the 2800+. Like my dad always says "Let the people who want to be on top of the computing world invest it 1st and then after the price has gone down buy it urself." So in other words don't buy the 733$ amd 64 fx it's a waist of money if you ask me. Hell it's fast and the best cpu out there but look at the price. You'll buy it and 4 months later something new will come out. Don't get last years technology either. Go for the 3000+ or 2800+.

alienware i think you are getting things mixed up. the 3000+ they are talking about is the Athlon 64 3000+. they are not talking about the FX, or the barton 3000+

Umm Alienware, AMD isn't going to do that with the FX. They're only going to have one or two models on the market at any one time. That way they can keep the price high. At least that's what I read.
He has a point though, why bother buying one? Unless you use Linux or BSD, you aren't going to be able to take full advantage of it. Sure it executes the 32 bit code faster, but you could do just as well by getting a barton, ramping up the voltage and bus speed.
One question for anyone who knows the answer - why on earth did AMD come up with 3 socket specs. Sure enough the Athlon64 is a different chip, but the FX is an opteron, just they chopped off one of the pins. Why's that? Just a money-making scheme?

this is not the same discussion as that topic. why dont you try to answer his question instead.

on the 3 sockets, i think i remember reading that the 754 pin is only temporary and that later on the normal (non-fx) A64's would also use the other socket type (not sure which of those 2 though)

alienware-51: read this

markina: unless you are an uber gamer, the extra 512kb on the 3200 wont help you. Get DDR400, 333 wont cut it. The usual suspects top the good mobo list. ASUS gets my reccomendation.

Socket 754: is single channel only, for single channel AMD Athlon 64 processors. It will also eventually accomodate the plain Athlon XP which will essentially be like the duron. This is and will continue to be the "bargain computer" socket.

Socket 940: the dual channel socket for AMD's opteron processors. As far as I know, this socket will continue on in the server market and is in the desktop only temporarily.

Socket 939: the soon to be introduced redesign of socket 940. It has the voltage pins and memory bus pins shuffled around to make it easier to go with a motherboard design with fewer layers, which means the prices will drop. ie: this will have the registered and/or ecc memory pins removed and voltage will be supplied by more of them (if I've read correctly, manufacturers need to worry less about crosstalk with this design). The one pin they left out will have a blank in the actual socket so no one will stick an Opteron in there and screw things up.

Spelling and grammar are beautiful things to learn, by the way
