Beefing up the PROC

Ok, I have a p4 1.6, 512 mb RAm, geforce 4 4600 ti. I want to get at least a p4 2.4 or better maybe. Now there are all these things about hyper threading, should a get an 800 Mhz FSB, and other miscellaneous processor lingo. I want to play DOOm 3 and HL2 as best as I can, and right now I know I have sufficient RAM, and the Vid card is not too shabby, but my PROC is weak. What would be the best thing to get?

Thanks

The best thing would probably to wait untill the games are released then buy the hardware thats out then.

Before you even upgrade your CPU you must find out what the max of your motherboard can handle. If you plan to do that, then consider upgrading your motherboard first, then CPU.

IMO your proc is fine. If you want to upgrade your p4 to a C you'd probably have to buy a new board too.

LOL! I called Gateway juuust to see what they say about my mobo and whatnot, and I asked them what model i have (they wouldnt give me the exact model, laaame) and how high I can go with a new proc.. They said I can go as high as a 2.0 GHz, so its not worth me upgrading to that, also the funny thing is that they said "they dont recommend upgrading the processor" lol, Yeah ok that way they can make more money off the people who don't know anything about pc's and have them buy a WHOLE new machine.
