At Home 56k help needed

Well, for starters, I'm a gamer. I play several games on the internet, and I need to know something.

Is there a way to give a certain program (in this case, a game) higher priority over others? Normally my modem will download at a rate of 5 kbps and around there, but when I play a game, it'll only be going at 3 kbps (more or less). I want to make it so that it gives the game undivided attention, you know?

Thanks

Usually when you sign on to your ISP with a dial up modem, what ever rate it says you connect at is what you get. It's pretty lame, especially if you use AOL, cuz a gajillion people already use that, so you can kiss your gaming good bye!

Well when you're playing a game, your bandwidth gets split up between uploading and downloading, thus it will appear to go slower if you're only looking at the downstream data.

got cable tv?
just get a cable modem for around 70 bucks.

dont rent it from your cable provider.(thats just dumb).
i find its worth the extra ten/twenty bucks to have both cable tv and the internet piped into the house on the same line. that, and i dont tie up the phone line.
well....anyways.............

Gaming

wait wait...

I live in a small town with no DSL or cable available.. but there is a tv-cable service. Ive asked them if they also provide internet but its the same usual denial around here.. People are just lazy or they dont know what the f--- theyre doing. anyways, explain a little more, please..

oh and it connects at 50,000 bps so I shouldn't complain.. but still i see other 56kers with twice my speed. Another thing is that when i download (like on Kazaa) i can still be downloading at 5 kpbs and uploading at another 2-3.

i would have to completely agree with shifter. my internet is 84 a month which includes cable and 1 digital box with movie channels (hbo, showtime and so on) and i get downstream of 2.3 (lowest) 3.4 (highest)

One possability, if you are stuck with dialup..is to consider an external serial modem...why?..because usually they are nice "hardware" modems and they can compensate somewhat for slightly weak telephone lines...I have been on jobs where the regular software modem works fine in our shop..but when the peeps take it home it wont connect at all....so automatically you know they have weak noisy phone lines (they live in the county etc)...so we try an external serial modem...BOOM!, goes from not connecting at all to 56k.

Worth considering...especially if gaming...every little bit counts.
