Just built a new system using a asus A7N8X-X mobo and an athlon 2800 processor when the system posts it only shows the memory frequency at 133mhz, shouldnt this be 333mhz for this processor if I try and alter these settings in the bios the system will not boot, also I am only running pc2100 dimms in it could this be the problem/
Yes your memory is the limiting factor, you can't run these PC2100 at 166MHz FSB ..
Upgrade the memory if you want to use the full FSB speed of your CPU. Otherwise, you can only use your system at 133MHz now ...
Your CPU is an XP2800 2083MHz with 166MHz FSB (333MHz DDR) .. now its running at 133MHz which makes its total speed at 1660MHz so now you're using it actually as an AMD XP2000 CPU.
Of course it is slower and it is recommended that you get a compatible memory, PC2700 or even PC3200 ones, so you can use your system to the max ...
yes your cpu will be running at the correct speed but the memory will be running at 133 . you won't get the best performance but it will be running right at least .
in the bios under advanced change the cpu external freq (mhz) TO 166
then change the memory frequency to 80% that will set it to 133 ..
when you get atleast pc2700 go back into the bios and set the memory frequency to auto or 100%
Omardeth is correct ..
In the memory setting you can choose between SPD (CPU FSB) or you can set it manually to a specific number which should be 133MHz ...
