I think I have a virus

but I cannot be sure. Why do I think I have a virus?? Well, my pc seems to reboot itself intermitently just shutsdown adn reboot.

well it doesn't go thru the sutdown procedure its well just reboots.

I thought it might be a heat problem cos I run my athlon 1800+ (unclocked) at about 52 degrees and am gonna reseat my heatsink.

I'e also noticed that pc trys to connect to internet. I say no and it still try. So therefore I think I have a virus.

I have all the pathes loaded of windows 2k (which is what I am running) and I have ran Nortons Antivirus which is also upto date

still no joy. Anyone elese have this problem?? anyone have an ideas??

Thanks in advance

I'm drunk and I can not read what you just typed sorry. To get it straight your computer reboots on its own for no reason. Try to run something like speedfan or aida32 something that measures actual cpu temps while under load

also whats your power supply might be a bad ps unit or an overheating one...clean it as well as the cpu fan

if you really think you have a virus then go to http://www.pandasoftware.com/actives..._principal.htm
or http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ for an online scan

Pretty good advice just the same .

You also may want to run AdAware / Spybot to be sure.

52º is a bit hot though...

definitely run adaware6 http://www.lavasoftusa.com

and as stated could be the power supply or heat.

Do you overclock the RAM and/or video card also? Maybe you could come back a little on certain settings to see what happens

Hi,

With 2K you can select for an automatic reboot following system failure.

Maybe you have some problem developing and this is why you are rebooting. I have that option selected on this PC but I've never seen it work so I can't describe exactly how it looks when its rebooting like this.

You can check if you have it set easy enough. Start/Settings/Control Panel/System. When you get to the System Properties window click on the Advanced Tab and then on the Startup and Recovery tab at the bottom.

As for connecting to the net, this could be as simple as having selected in DUN to Dial "whenever a network connection is not present"

Just remember if you not particularly familiar with changing things like this around that a lot of time and trouble can be saved if you write down what you are changing with existing and new values. This will make going back a whole lot easier than trying to remember a few changes a few days down the road.( My experience anyway)

Cheers

well I used adware to see if i had virus and I did. that has cleaned my machine up somewhat. Although its still tends to reboot but not connect to the internet now.

I can only assume I have an overheating CPU. I need some software to monitor that and try re seating the heatsink again.

I'll try what you've said nodnerb2 and see how it goes.
thanks for you help so far

Take the side of your PC case off, and see what happens when you keep your PC running then.

I don't believe Adaware detects viruses(pl ?). There are also quite a few vriuses that disable NAV.

You may find a scan at tm housecall helpful.

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Although I haven't tried it, Bitdefender also offers one:
