floppy problem

Ok i've had this problem for a while with every computer i install my OS with. After installing Windows 2000 Pro on any computer, my floppy drive never works. I've already tried flipping the floppy cable and the line/stripe was on the correct side already. Also the light just stays on the whole time when using the computer and never shuts off. Can someone please help me out here? Thanks.

this is a standard rule of thumb
if the light stays on, the cable is reversed.
there is no room for argument on this fact.
so double check both ends of the cable

Systems

I did though. I even switched sides (all four) and still no luck. Also yes the power is plugged in. So no problem there. I've tried two floppies so far (one oem, one new) and both ahve not worked. Any ideas?

see baileys post, lol.

sometimes to be sure I like to find some floppy cables with the "keys" on them..or with a "blocked pin" on the end of the cable so that it will only go in one way.

Are you sure your putting the twisted end of the cable neaerest to the floppy?

Is it possible that the drive is dead? They are far from the most reliable equipment.

Well what I would do to "test" the drives is to Create an MS-DOS Boot Floppy .. set your BIOS to boot from the Floppy 1st.. then the CDROM(s) 2nd and 3rd so that you don't boot into Win2k... insert the Floppy.. and see if it will boot to DOS with it. the long end of the cable should go to the MB.. and the other end of the cable goes to the drive.. flip it if you need to. This should rule out Win2k as the problem.

the cable is not connected right if the light is on all the time . it is reversed , as stated in the first post to answer this thread .

make sure the end of the cable that is flat is pluged into the motherboard and the other end that has the little cut and the cable is fliped is pluged into the floppy . the side of the ribon cable that has a red or blue , most the time it is red line on it is pluged into the mother board so that the line is on the #1 pin . and the side of the ribon cable with that line on it is closest to the power plug on the floppy and you should be good to go .

If the cable ISN'T reversed, it's either a) a bad cable (happens alot) or b) a bad floppy drive (also happens alot). The cable will be about, umm, $5, and the drive...well, you're getting ripped off if you pay more than $15.

About the only way to tell is to find another cable and test with that.
