noobish question about 9600XT
i'm comparing these two cards:
powercolor 9600Xt 500mz/600mz = $176.00
Sapphire 9700pro 325mz/620 = $238.00
newegg prices
by looking at the core and clock speed i dont know why the 9600xt is so much cheaper....so um....is the 9600xt a way better deal or a 9700pro would be better?

The 9700 Pro comes with a 256-bit memory bus and 8 rendering pipelines as opposed to the 128-bit and 4 pipes of the 9600XT. If you take a look at benchmarks, you'll see that the 9600XT performs worse than the 9700 Pro.
As for the better deal, it all depends on you. Some people would get the 9600XT 'cause it comes with a free HL2 coupon. As for me, if I had the money to spend, I'd go with the 9700 Pro for the better performance.

The 9600 XT has a higher core only to try to make up for its bottlenecks, 4 Pixel Pipeline, 2 Geometry pipelines, lower fill rate, smaller memory bandwidth and 128 Bit memory BUS. The 9700 has 8 Pixel pipeline, 4 geometry pipelines, faster fill rate, much more memory bandwidth and a 256 Bit memory.
Way better.

How does the 9600FX compare to a Geforce 4 4600 Ti? Any MAJOR difference, besides that it's DX 9.0 and Ti is 8.0.

I got a 9600 NP a while back, to replace my failed GF4 Ti4200. The 9600 benchmarks a bit higher, but I didn't notice any significant difference in gameplay, etc. Based on that, the 9600FX probably doesn't have a huge advantage over the Ti4600 either. Although the DX9 support will probably be a nice feature moving forward.

Yeah it would, because when I get HL2, I want to play in that HIGH detail. I was responded here that if I play with the 4600 it will run nice & smooth but it wont have the full effects as a DX 9.0 card. Plus I just remembered, that if you purchase a 9600FX, you get HL2 full version with it, and I got a $100 best buy gift card coming to me so thats not too shabby! |
