Kids K7S5A Pro worked for 5 min!?!?!?

Just put a K7S5A Pro board in a friends computer to replace an older MSI board that died. I installed the board with video and sound card and 256MB PC-133 RAM and AMD Duron 1.1GHz.

It booted up and i was disabling onboard sound and running through the bios. when i told it to exit and save, the computer just turned off. I hit the Power switch thinking i had hit it, but nothing happened. I unplugged the power supply, waited and plugged it back in. When i hit the power switch, just the fans move, no beeps no nothing. I removed all cards and memory and still nothing. I even removed the CPU to try and get an error beep and nothing. I put the Duron 1.1 in a working motherboard that had a 1.2 Duron in it and no boot. I took the good 1.2 Duron and put it in the K7S5A board and same results as with the 1.1. I put the 1.2 back in its original board and it booted fine.

Is both the new motherboard and 1.1 Duron dead? Has anyone seen this situation with the K7S5A Pro? The board was baught through newegg, so i am sure i can return it.

Thank you for any help and guidance.

Under what circumstances did the MSI board die? Sounds like there are suspect parts that casued the k7 to kick the bucket.

try resetting the cmos either by a jumper on the mobo or removing the battery

the readon it didnt work in the other board might have been that the bios wasn't set right or the mobo wont support it

The voltage regulator on the MSI board failed and killed the original Duron 800MHz chip. My friend then purchsed the Duron 1.1 before i knew it was the regulator and we could not get the MSI board to boot all the way. If i cooled the voltage regulator by freezing it, the MSI board would boot into bios for about 2 min before the regulator got too hot and failed.

I have tried reseting the CMOS by doing the jumper and taking out the battery with no luck.

I am not getting any error beeps, even with nothing in the board

Ok, my bad.

I did not have any memory installed when i put the known good 1.2 in the board. with memory installed it boots fine with the 1.2 Details, Details.

Ok, i do remeber on thing that leads me to believe i fried the 1.1 processor. I was in the bios hardware monitor while running the 1.1 for the first time and saw that the CPU temp was 57c. i thought the Durons could handle like 70c-80c before dieing. so when i did see the 57c, i thought i will finish my changes and the shutdown and re-apply the thermal grease. But that is when it turned off and my problems started.

In short: Thermal solution not attached properly, CPU dead. Not exactly a new problem there ...
