CD-RW and DVD-RW Drives no longer working

Hi Folks,
This is my first time on a tech forum - I hope someone can help!

Here's the problem: After installing some DVD writing software (namely Primodvd and RecordNow Max), both my CD-RW and DVD-RW are no longer working. They appear in the device manager with "This Device Cannot start (Code 10)" errors. They do not appear under "My Computer".

I'm not 100% sure about the chain of events - it just seemed to happen - but basically neither of the Applications I mentioned recognised my devices, so I installed an update from this page:

http://www.veritas.com/us/products/recordnow/drivers/

I'm pretty sure it was after this that everything went pear-shaped.

I've done all the obvious things - Uninstalling the applications, using a registry cleaning app to remove the relevant registry entries, uninstalling the device, unplugging them, switching master/slave, going through safe mode, but nothing works. I even plugged my old dvd player back in and got the same message.

I can't even reinstall windows because I haven't got a working cd-rom player...

Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum!

Windows xp?

tried "system restore"?

(you could try an external cd drive to do a windowsXP "repair" install)

Sorry, I should've said - It's Windows 2000 unfortunately, so I guess using an external drive is out...

Try using ForceASPI to fix it.

Thanks for the tip. I gave it a shot, unfortunately it didn't appear to make any difference. In the end I managed to boot up from the Win 2K cd and reinstalled the OS. A bit drastic, but everything's hunky-dory now (apart from all the apps I need to reinstall...)
Thanks anyway!
