Point of Sale Equipment. How to manage it?

Hi, I am a computer technicain and I normally sell computer equipment. I recently had a subway owner ask me to manage his 3 stores that were setup on a POS system. It is nothing real difficuilt on the computer level, but I am still new with the POS equipment. He had a PII 400Mhz PC with 128Mb RAM/6Gb HD/Windows 98/...etc. (The computer could be beafed up a little, but it is working fine/fast for me to worry about fixing it). His cash drawer does not automatically open (He has to manually open it with a key). The cash drawer is plugged into the computer via a RJ-12 connecter. I believe it is suppose to be plugged into the receipt printer so it can take advantage of the high voltage that the printer can produce to open the drawer (just my suggestion). That is probably the problem. Anyway, he needs help and I know some, but am willing to learn more. Does anybody know any good informative sites I can go to (it would be even better if it was geared towards Subway's Software...but if not, that's OK)? Thanks!

what exactly are you trying to acomplish? trying to get the door to open correctly??

You probably just need the name of the exact software he is running and then scour their website/help files etc.

Restaurant POS Software Search Page
Custom Software for Subway Shops
A *.doc file of Subway Software, from .edu site
This one looks most promising!

Look, I know those are a lot of links to click through, and I'm sorry. just be sure to "open in a new window" so if you close one, you don't have to find your way back to this thread. I hope these links have helped you...I did some searching and sorting, and hopefully found some that are meaningful. good luck to you!

(This is where I found all these links)

hey, no problem...I really had no background in pos software...and then after I posted the response here, I remembered a woman in my Graduate Studies program for the class "Information Systems Overview" had a similar question about restaurant software...so I jumped on our school's online discussion board and posted the links there too
glad I could be of help...TechIMO is full of people who want to help out!

The cash drawers are usually connected to a serial port with a DB-9 to RJ11/12 adapter. One or more of the signal lines are used to drive the drawer solenoid. If you can find out the mfr and model no. of the drawer(usually a label on it somewhere), you can go to their site for a schematic.
