Long Distance Wireless LAN

Hi - me again

okay, so I have my house, and then a small hill and a wood and then my friends house. They are approximately 1 mile apart.

I want to allow him to share my broadband connection, wirelessly.

I thought I could try this...

Get a Linksys WAP (11?) and connect it to my switch, and give it a different network id (name) than mine. Connect it to one of those homemade antenna (a yugan can or something like that I saw an example of somewhere).

At his house, do the same thing, but use a linksys wireless router, so he has like 4 ethernet ports or something along with a can antenna and have his WAP set to the same network name as my one with the same WEP keys..

would this work? and what conenctors do I need for linksys stuff?

also, how legal is this in the united kingdom? am I going to get into trouble at all?

how would I set up mac address filtering for access points too?

thanks,
Koal

(rain, fog, swarm of butterflies) = goodbye signal for him if it does work...wireless is just too unreliable over great distances in my experience.

afriend had a configuration with two wap11, they connected them to external antennas that were arranged to see each other, then configured the wap's one has host(dont remember well) and the other one like client.....

But the distance was less than 1/2 mile...

many comerical systems use that principle at grater distance with no ill effects, it is a very common practice.

by useing a home made antenna will create some down falls by not having a proper design and so have less gain and less signal at the reciveing end which can cause a loss of signal under poor weather conditions.

As EMC2 has mentioned a lot of things interfere with wireless

but if you want to look into trying

http://www.fab-corp.com/

they have antennas for all needs
