noob questions, why do I would need to upgrade to 2.6.0 kernel from 2.4.22?

Yippee!

Also, washe, kernel 2.6 is supposed to improve responsiveness overall through preemption, and I hear that cd writing is way less CPU intensive because they got rid of scsi emulation in there and can talk to ATAPI devices directly now.

Compilation is way faster and there a few less steps. The system seems faster and smoother to me, still doing some testing but overall a good experience, so far that is......

the new menuconfig interface is great. Any idea if the nvidia module still has problems with the 2.6 kernel?

Two things, first if you're running Fedora Core 1, you can already pick up a precompiled 2.6.0 kernel in rpm format here. Tis double click and reboot goodness if you (like me) can't get USB working right.

To get a working nvidia driver with 2.6.0 just get the patched version from here.

There is also a pretty comprehensive explanation of what's been updated or added here:
