DRAKE 9.2 DVD w/Brit Mag

The British magazine Linux Format comes this month December 2003 with a 4 Gig DVD of Complete Mandrake 9.2 Distro. This includes Gnome 2.4, XFCE, a lightwaeight alternative to KDE or GNOME, Puppy Linux, a 64Mb distro. Also about 6 -8 games.

This UK Magazine sells in NYC for $14.95, or at least what I've seen.

Apparently, it also comes in a 3 CD version, with the first two for the Distro.

This is the Complete OS, and there is no mention of Sharewhere --I hope this is true.
.Published in DVD by Future Publishing.

Look for issue 47 of LINUX FORMAT Magagzine. The Mag alone has a lot of content on Linux.

I actually bought this ed....good mag, good cd's (3)
help for the n00b inside is great..as well as many articles about security, config, etc.
it's about 114pages.
features: basic networking, write a compiler, make games in Blender, Customize The GIMP, use sockets with PHP.
at Borders Bookstore, I paid $13.95.
worth the buy, imo.

So apparently it does come in both DVD and CD formats.

I think the content is a little different, around the edges. Although, I'm not sure why, except the need to fit into different media.

P.S. There is the option of NOT having an Administartor Password in 9.2--which the mag stongly warns you NOT to take. To important for safety--even if you are the only user.

Hmm..gotta check out da PuppyLinux .

Once you get it installed be sure to get the 166 MB(and counting) of security, bugfixes, and application updates.
I've heard from reliable sources(hi,Germ ) that it's better to download the updates and install them manually, because one of the bugs is in the Automatic Update utility.
I,of course, heard this after I ran the automatic update.
The size of the updates may be more than what I stated as there seems to be a couple of new ones every week.Which is a good thing when compared to the speed at which other OSs release thier updates.

alking about the speed od updates--yeah, I know you mean bug fixes--do we really need another version every six months or so?

You know it takes a while for bugs to be ID'd and fixed. So by the time a Version is "mature" and its issues are at least known, if not adressed--some new Version comes along.

Seems like people wait with baited breath to be Beta Testers--and let's face it, everything in SW is still beta until its been mass marketed and used for several months. The "final release" is always to a large extent, arbitrary.

Hey !

Never get Zonk SW Ver. 1.0

Yeah,I did mean bugfixes.
I'm quite happy puttering along with Mandrake 9.1.Still works fine for me.I tend to skip every other release of 'Drake or Suse, anyway. But now that I have a broadband connection there's no reason why I cant check them out.

I buy this mag whenever I see it. Most of the info in it is a little dated, but its the same with all magazines. I can use the internet for news etc, but its nice to get away from the computer occasionally.
I'm not too interested in Mandrake though, and they don't stock the DVD version up here grrr.

What's up, nukes?
personally I prefer Knoppix...esp on older machines with low memory, low hdd space. run it directly from the cd-rom drive!
MDK is kinda "barebones" imo, compared to RH 8.0 and other distros I've looked at. it's kinda plain, and doesn't offer the tons of games, etc I've come to appreciate.
I just finished the mag...and I'd like to say I look nothing like the guy on the back of the magazine! (nice pic, eew!)
lol

When running it by default, I have personally found Knoppix to have problems with anything less than 128 MB of ram.Though, I guess that is considered low memory nowadays.
That's not to say it wont work with a lesser amount, using the (for instance) desktop=fluxbox option at boot.

nukes i get the dvd version from wh smiths, but i gotta go to the one at central station railway station, my local branch doesn't do it. for the americans, the cd mag is SLIGHTLY cheaper and often has software they don't put on the dvd. the dvd version usually has a couple of smaller distros on it as well as a main featured distro and all sorts of stuff such as kde and gnome latest versions. well worth a read. lots of uk pc mags do excellent coverdisks, 'coz britain is to poor to get the internet.
