Help with a linksys 4 port router (befsr41)

I'm trying to connect two computers to a router and then to a DSL modem to share the connection. Both computers are in the same room, but are about a few inches a part. I use bellsouth DSL...

I'm running XP on both computers, first off. I have everything set up, and the connection between the computers and the router is perfect. I plug the ethernet cable into the WAN port on the router, and plug the other end into the LAN port on the DSL modem, but I can't get the internet to work on either computer. Can anyone figure out my problem? I have IE never dialing a connection, I've tried just about everything I can think of, but I can't figure out how to fix it. I have a dynamic IP.

If anyone could help me set up my router, I'd be very happy.

Do either of the PC's get an IP address?

Tyep 'IPCONFIG' at a DOS Prompt and see if you have an IP address.

Have you put 'http://192.168.1.1' in as an address in IE to setup the router?

Yes, both of them get IP's... x.x.x.100 and x.x.x.101 I believe. Yes, I am also able to access the set up page. I can ping the router and both computers can ping eachother, I just can't access the internet with the router plugged into my modem.

Check and make sure you have 'Automatically detect settings' unchecked.

Internet Properties
Connections tab
LAN Settings button

Can you PING any other address, like www.yahoo.com?

It says "ping request could not find host www.yahoo.com. Please check the name and try again."

What I had to do was set the dsl modem first...to "bridge" mode.

THEN configure the router to PPPoE as opposed to "obtain ip automatically"

seems the dsl modems are just like the routers in that you can do the 192.168.1.1 and configure them..so you might need to hoook back straight to the dsl modem and do 192.168.1.1 and turn it to "bridge" mode

I had to do that yesterday when I went to verizon dsl

I tried connecting to 192.168.1.1 with the ethernet cord plugged into the modem. It doesn't work, gives em a cannot find server error.

Your not logging into BellSouth. Go back to the 'Setup' tab and post what that has.

Your "WAN Connection Type" should be PPPoE
You should have your username and password
I have mine set to "Keep Alive" for 180 sec.

Click "Apply" and then check your 'Status' tab to see if it has you connected then. It may take a few seconds.

EDIT - Oh yeah, you might wanna remove your MAC Address info in your post, somebody might try to get funny and mess w/ you. And don't post your IP Address or any user info.
