Modem GARBAGE
When I try to Query my modem in the modem properties, it says that it Cannot open the port. Right now it's says its on COM3. I'm running WIN2k and I'm trying to set this up to work for AOL. Anyone have any ideas how I can get it to work?
Thanks.

Is the modem already connected? You can't query it while it's in use.
What model modem is it? Is it showing up okay in Device Manager? Is it a new install of the modem, did you load drivers?
Have you tried rebooting and then querying it first thing?

Yes, the funny thing is that Windows detects the modem and it says the device is working properly. I just noticed though that went I went to COM ports in the device mngr, only Com 1 & 2 and an LPT port was shown, but not COM 3 which the modem is on. Perhaps that's the problem??

No, COM3 is a virtual port, usually setup by the driver install.
What have you tried to fix it?

Well for some reason when Windows detects my modem it sets it to com 3. So what I'm trying to do now is go to ADD HARDWARE, and Im going to install a COM port, and I am going to configure it for com 3, it was being used by the WDM sound driver, but I reassigned the sound to anoher IRQ #. I don't understand though why WIN keeps assigning it to COM3 instead of 1 or 2.

You likely already have two serial ports that are given the COM1 and COM2 labels by Win. If you aren't using your serial ports, you can disable them in the BIOS and your modem will be assigned one of those labels.
. A couple of reasons I have run across that cause the Port In Use error are ghost/phantom devices and having another piece of software (e.g fax) that hooks the modem on boot up to watch for faxes. To fix ghost/phantom devices, go into Safe Mode, enter DeviceManager, look for duplicate entries under Modems and/or Ports. Remove all entries and let hardware be reinstalled on reboot.
. On fax software, just disable "Watch for Call". It should be able to watch just the Ring signal line transparently to other comm programs, but it doesn't seem to work a lot of the time.

Im guessing the wrong drivers. I had the same com3 problem. It appears that com3 is actually com1 but with a different address. I tinkerd with all kinds of bios setting and such but couldnt get it to work. Finally got the proper drivers and ... it worked.

As zepper said, go into your BIOS and disable Com 1 and 2...this will release the resources to the modem. You can try disabling com (serial)port 2 first, remove the modem from the system and reboot..see if 2K will put the modem on com 2 now..if so, no need to disable both ports.

Ok, so the BIOS has serial port 1 (Com 1 3) and serial port 2 (Com 2 4). I disabled both and went into windows and looked under ports and oonly had the LPT port, ok cool. So I went back to BIOS and enabled serial port 2, I went back to windows and it automaticallly deteced modem. But the modem was set to COM 4. So I added a "stadard 56K V90 modem" It installed on COM 2. So when I went to query the modem I got this "The modem failed to respond. If it is internal make sure that the interrrupt port is properly set" Win says the device is working propery and it is set on COM 2 the only avail COM port right now. If I try to query the modem that windows detected previously, it just says "Couldn't open PORT" What can I do?

sounds to me like the modem is just bad, lol.
Had any storms lately??
"Win says the device is working propery" that doesnt always tell you anything concrete. I had to replace one yesterday...windows showed it as being ok but when I did the diagnostic it would say port already open, or something, cant remember.
