LET"S TALK ABOUT ICS

Here's my project-3 boxes
1 box w/ Winserver 2003, 2 with Windows XP idellly the XP clients will connect through Win2003 box.

They work fine where shares are concerned...but the ICS DON"T work...My NET+ Teacher Said "Make one a NAT it will act as a router" SOmething to that effect anyway...problem is he didn't bonk me on the head with his magic wand....I have no clue what the hell he meant outside of - NAT (network address translation)
this is my second day in class
The net setup from win 2003 doesnt work right on the xp machines and vice versa-it runs but Ics-NOPE, I'm thinking I need to manually configure the ip's etc. on the xp boxes...or just get a hub or cisco 2500 series router with an asychronous port and an external modem...I don't know really which way to go with this...I am willing to dedicate one box to just managing the connectivity, I'm thinking any old box with the right amount of NICS and minimum requirements will do...maybe dig up one of these old socket 7's laying around and bring it to life again???
fire away...all posts are welcome and appreciated.
David

I have no clue about w2003 specifically..but in general to use ICS you need two nics in the ics machine....one goes to your isp..the other to a hub and then from the hub to the other machines.

The other machines are set to "obtain an ip automatically"

Basically that IS acting like a router.....because ICS is a type of a dhcp server since it is giving out IP addresses..also it is doing the nat...so form the internet only the w2003 machine is "visible" and the other machines would have "internal" or "private" ips.

(you might have known all that already, sorry, lol)

how do you have the machines hooked up...you didnt say.

If you have any sort of router you need to turn off the dhcp function of the router...for instance if you have like a linksys home router/4 port switch you need to turn off the dhcp and just use it as a switch....because the dhcp from the router will interfere with the dhcp from the ics machine

so how do you actually have em hooked up?..you said they are sharing ok.
