Friend needs gfx card for about $100

He needs this card for gaming, he wants to get halo in the near future
My other friend eccomends- GFFX 5200
I reccomend- GF4 Ti-4200
now, we are having a huge debate on which card will perform better. He claims that the FX 5200 will be able to run DX9 and the 4200 CANNOT
however, i still think that the 5200 is just too slow to run dx9 games to its full potential, and I think that he should run halo in dx8 or something
now, which card do yall think will run better on halo(or any other card)
thx

Halo won't run well on any card or config. But... between those cards i'd rather have the Ti 4200. 5200 is nothing but a Geforce 4 MX successor (though it definitely will run Halo, because i've tried the game on a PIII /w 64MB Geforce 4 MX 440 graphics and it played well at the lowest res).

Ti-4200 will still run DX9 games, it just won't take advantage of the advanced DX9 protocols. My GF4 Ti-4200 rocked. And from what I've read, like said, the DX9 performance on the 5200 is lacking anyway.

Since I bought a 9800 P, I'm an ATi fanboy. But avoid anything with SE like the plague. You should be able to buy a normal 9600 for under $100, and here's a link to a 9600 pro for $125.

id say that my config runs halo very well. i can run it at 1600x1200 with settings maxxed with playable framerates (i.e. 40+fps).

my rig is an athlonxp 3600+, 1gb ram ddr400 geil, 9800pro, nforce2 motherboard... blah blah.

I notice you mention 40 fps. well there you go- an example of why it won't run well on any config.
