Mandrake Upgrade <?>
i currently have mandrake 9.1 installed, i installed mandrake 9.2 on a different computer, and found that it has less pakages and "extras"
for exmample: there is about 4-5 games, in 9.1 there was about 30games... some pakages found in 9.1 are not included in 9.2 for example XMMS!
im talking about the download version of course, now lets say that i have 9.1 with all those "extras" and i decide to upgrade to 9.2, will this remove some of my current pakages to be configured for 9.2 or what?
one more thing: KDE in mandrake 9.2 is very "buggy" -- try to rename a folder in Konquerer and it will crash, sending you out of it in a second. then when u come back and rename a different folder, once again it crashes!... im thinking after a while it stops crashing, but either way. not cool
i've been looking into SUSE linux cuz it resembles mandrake in some ways but its very hard to get the download version of it...... i'd have to install from web and load some "modules" for my network card and what not.. which i dont even know what it is!!!
I just want a reliable "multimedia" linux system. RedHat dont do the trick.
any comments welcomed
thank u

i'm not going to argue with you. i know 9.1 is horrible.
But, i need a full-featured multimedia linux system,
i had XP but got a virus and i just got sick of that, and all those microsoft problems.
i have redhat 9 on CD but when installed it can't even play a STUPID mp3, sure tell me to download the redhatmp123.rpm pakage for Xmms but that will only allow mp3 playback through XMms, what about all the movie codecs? or playback throughout the system
tell me again that i can do that by simplie recompiling my kernel and doing some other things, huge CODE !!! i've seen it. and i kinda dont wanna mess with the kernel.
i hear so much <bs> over SUSE sucks, and Mandrake sucks, and REdhat sucks...... makes me wonder, which is the most decent acceptable distro?
im no linux-pro, i just want a linux distro capable of playing music, and video.

ok, i'm sorry if what ever i may say offends anyone but. if there is one thing i hate more is old advice.
Everyone knows that sometimes the newer things aren't the best.
sure mandrake 8.1 was the best, and may even be the best multimedia linux distro ever, but lets not completely be outdated here.
and wait........ what system do you use? since you did mention that the "only" linux distro you've used was mandrake 8.1 then you must be running some kind of win NT system, but then again, im sure you know that Microsoft Windows sucks,
and if you dont' happen to be using that either then you must be running some kind of Solaris, Sun, IBM, Unix, MacOSX, FreeBSD, UltraSparc or otherwise ALIEN o/s operating system.
*above mentioned o/s's may not be accurate.
and yes, i did say "comments welcomed" but plz lets not give negative or otherwise offensive comments.
i was bothered to hear that mandrake sucks, yes i know that, tell me something i dont know? like, what doesn't!
i apologize for this.

well linux is not easy.... MDK 9.2 is not the best release I can second that even the kernel sources are missing on cd3, but well you can download the packages you need via urpmi or drake.
I have Mandrake 9.2 and XMMS was on the cd, you only need to install the packages on rpmdrake....
just my 5 cents....
I have heard that suse 9.0 was kinda good havent tested yet myself...

so now you run winXP ?
see i did that for several months, but to be honest, i had more problems with windows than i did with linux.
1) blaster worm came along and infected my machine.
2) corrupt files
3) a malicious website dropped some spybot software and and infected my machine, i have pop up blockers and antivirus, and a firewall but still no use.
to be quite honest, im sick of....... so i reformatted my 80gb drive and installed the only distro available to me that would play all my movies and all my music. Redhat is Excellent, to be exact, i think its one of the finest distro's out there, but it lacks the ability to PLAY MUSIC! you have to do a million things just to enable what redhat has "purposely" removed from it.
once again, i apologize, i guess i got a lilttle crazy over the fact that everyone says MANDRAKE sucks. yes it does, and I KNow it ! :-)
to be honest, it sucks aLOT !!!
you maybe asking yourself this question, THEN why do you keep using it?
simply cuz its the only linux distro i have, SUSE is hard to get, i would have to go to BestBuy and Purchase a copy of it, then again, i heard SUSE sucks too. LOL
I tried Gentoo Linux but i had to go and actually (manually) compile kernel specifications which sucked ! and in the end, it didn't even boot.
but hey, windows trully sucks, there is only two things i miss.
Native Instrument's -- Tracktor DJ v.1.06 (dj mixer)
Cerulean Studio's -- Trillian 1.0 (chat)
thanks again! :-)
