How to Upgrade Gnome

Ok Need a little help with this one...

I want to upgrade to gnome 2.4 the only thing is i dont have the slightest clue how to get started. The gnome web site has about a million tar.gz. If someone can just get me started that would be awesome. Do i have to download all the tar.gz files seperately??? After that step what would i do?

Thanx for your help guys...

ps. Please add an easier installer setup for linux programs would be nice on my christmas list

Well this depends on what distro you are using.

If it is RPM based then your distro should have 2.4 RPMS available and you can install those eaisly.

Otherwise you can use portage if you are on Gentoo, or apt-get if you are on Debian.

Else, heh. You're gonna have to install from source. Installing Gnome from source is a real pain. As you already noticed, there are about 50 .tar.gz's. You will need to download all of these and compile them IN ORDER that the Gnome website specifies. This can get to be a real pain, since pretty much each package depends on the one before it, if it can't find it, you have to make it find it. (Oh Joy!)
