Copy on the fly?

Has someone found a way to copy a dvd disc on the fly, even if the dvd disc we are copying has already been ripped and is no-longer encrypted?

I've tried it with Nero, using the "DVD Copy" function from one DVD Rom to a DVD Burner - but it does not work.

Thanks in advance,
Enigmafy

I dont know if it will ever work. I would imagine if there is no encryption it should work but I dont know of any computers that would handle it well. My AMD 1800+ with 512MB of RAM has enough trouble authoring one DVD without doing much else. So I imagine trying to copy on the fly would tax it even more. I think your best bet is to make a quick image file of the DVD and then burn it and then delete. The whole process if you had a 4X burner would take about 30min as opposed to a on the fly taking 20 but I think most burns on the fly would fail.

Once again thank you Phenious...

I guess I'll have to copy an image to my hard-drive.

I currently use DVD Decryptor to copy an already ripped disc to my harddrive.

Do you know of any better software that we could use instead?... I'm not sure (never actualy timed it) but I think the whole process takes me a little longer than 30min - more like 45min even at 8x speed.

As far as the computer not being able to handle "copy on the fly"...

I don't understand why it would not just load disc info into the buffer as needed for burning?

Also I have been able to decrypt two movies at the same time using DVD Shrink as I have a DVD ROM and a DVD Burner (Plextor 708A).

And I have also been able to burn a DVD with Nero and at the same time Decrypt a DVD using the DVD ROM with DVD Shrink - both programs running at the same time. (However, when I do this everything else runs very slowy, as my CPU is running at 99% to 100 %)

I Have an AMD 2400 with 512 MB of RAM... so I still don't understand why copying a dvd on the fly would be taxing on the system.

Try it. Let us know how it turns out I also run a number of other programs on my systems here at home and I am short of yoru processor speed by 600Mhz and the fact that I havent had a clean install for about a year and almost all of my 335GB are full so Windows might be having trouble with that. But I would enjoy seeing how your system handles copying 8GB to a HDD while copying 4.3GB off it at the same time. If you have multiple hard drives, maybe raid. or on different chains it may work fine. I dont know. Maybe you can run some tests and post some results with some cool photos and discriptions of what you did. That would be great

Oh yes, I forgot to metion that I do have multiple drives, so that when I do two things at once I make sure that seperate drives are being used for either reading or writing. I also installed both DVD devices so that they are on seperate IDE channels.

As far as tring it... I have tried it using Nero... I select the "DVD Copy" setting enter the source DVD (an already ripped DVD movie) in the DVD ROM and a DVD +R blank disc in the burner and as soon as I press burn I get the following error: "Cannot copy this disc to a DVD" (and nothing was burned to the DVD, thus no coaster)

I guess my question is, why would I get this error?

Tried something new with Nero

I just tryed something different, I don't know why I didn't think of it before... (Copied a copy of Finding Nemo (movie only))

1. Insert an already ripped DVD movie into your DVD Rom (The Source Disc)

2. Open Nero Burning ROM and instead of selecting "DVD Copy" in Nero select "DVD-Video"

3. Then copy all the files in the Video_TS folder located in the source disc to the Video_TS folder created by Nero (simply by selecting all, copy & paste) - This process took me about 10min, more or less, the progress bar has no timer on it. (See settings in next reply)

4. Once every thing is copied over press burn. (Because the movie I burned was small and it was burned at 8x this process took me 7min)

It worked for me - (and I'm pritty sure you don't even need a seperate DVD Rom to do this... you could just use your burner for both reading and writing)

Now I know this is not burning on the fly, but it is faster than the way I was doing it before using DVD Decryptor.

My objective is I don't want to store movies on my hard-drive (due to space issues), but I still want them ready for a quick burn when I need it. If anyone can come up with a faster method please let us know.

Thanks

Re Step 3 above

Note that in Nero under File\Preferences\Cache - the option: "Drag and drop from CD-ROM Drive" was enabled - Cache files that have been dragged over from a CD-Rom Drive.

(dispite that it says CD-ROM it also implies DVD-ROM)

I am currenlty trying it with this option disabled and will let you know if it worked...
