I'm guessing this is a pretty old program. I have run across some 3.5" disk-based programs that had very unique copy protection, including a "key" on Disk 1 of the set, that (apparently) got changed/re-written when that original disk was used during an installation.
What I used to do to get around this was to 1) write-protect Disk 1, then 2) make an exact duplicate of that disk using DOS' DISKCOPY command. The copied diskette would then be used for the installation.
If you have the same situation, you may be out of luck unless you can get your hands on the original, never-installed, first disk.
