Can't get ATI Radeon 9800 Pro to stay in 8x AGP

I recently purchased the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128 card and am having a hard time getting the AGP setting to stay in 8x mode. My mobo (Asus P4SDX) is set to be in 8x, yet when I set the 9800 to 8x and restart, it reverts back to 4x mode. Is there anything I am missing or doing wrong?

PC stats:

P4 2.4 Ghz
Asus P4SDX mobo
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128
1 Ghz DDR ram
120 Gig main HD
40 Gig secondary HD
SB Audigy 2 ZS
Windows XP Home

Check to see that 8x AGP is enabled in your bios setup. I know that with my 9700 pro, you can change the agp speed in the display settings.

1. Make sure that the bios is set to 8x AGP
2. Check your advanced display properties to make sure that 8x AGP is selected there.

Thats all I can offer. You have come to the right place....everyone here is great!

I wouldn't worry about it too much. There's little, if any, performance gain from AGP 8x.

Welcome to TechIMO!!

From what I've read 8X is more or less "hype."

Hardly any diff from 4X.

ATi's driver have a feature called "SmartGart". In short, the ATi driver tests the reliability of the AGP transfers, and reverts the system back to a slower mode if found no good.

Unless you're doing professional high complexity 3D rendering that really exercises AGP technology, I wouldn't worry about this. Games hardly ever use AGP at all, since they are carefully designed to have the scenery fit into the card's own memory.

Thanx gents, the replys are more than welcome.
To lauroy8: Yes, the bios is set to 8x. I guess theres some incompatability between the mobo and the 9800. I guess it don't matter much from what the others said.
