CD Burner Malfunction

Hello.

I have a Hewlett Packard Pavillion laptop, running on Windows '98, and I also have a Hewlett Packard CD Writer Plus 8200 external CD burner hooked up by USB. It was running fine for the first three CDs that I burned(trying to shrink my music collection to a more portable size), but the computer recently started reading the CD RW drive as a CD ROM drive. This essentially means that the burner software thinks that I don't have a burner available, and refuses to burn anything onto CD.

I've deleted and reinstalled the USB Driver for it(though I haven't re-downloaded it, since I currently don't have net access for the laptop), plugged in stuff in funny ways...hell, I've even accidentally deleted the device display driver, so now my computer is a beautiful 16-bit hunk of crap.

The only other thing that I've used the USB port for would be to hook up a digital camera to download the photos from it.

Any solutions out there? I really need to get the CD burner functioning so that I can get the computer back to 100%...

Thanks.

Try completely removing the driver before you attempt to reinstall it through the device manager as opposed to trying to reinstall over the driver. I would also recommend getting a fresh downloaded driver from somewhere on the internet be it through work, school or a cyber café

The computer doesn't know what the drive is, it's your burning software that needs to know. What are you using?

Also, did you by any chance install any other program between the time the burner was working and when it stopped? I installed Ghost once and it made my burner software choke.

Nero Ultra 6. Whenever I attempt to burn a CD, Nero 6 gives me an error labelled as "Invalid Session", which causes Nero to close down and go back to SmartStart.

I didn't install any programs after installing the USB Driver, as far as I know. It did start installing a "Mass Class Storage Adapter" when the error began to occur, though.

Windows XP Isn't A cheap fix but...if you know Ware to get it cheap you will probably fare better than with win98...
Does the bios detect the drive ? probably wouldn't though because it is an external device....I had to flash the firmware on the drive under windows 98 on a pavillion once but it was an internal drive...search HP....

Systems Media test area check cable

I am using windows xp OS. I have a Intel D850GBAL mother board. I have a 62gig hard drive as the master and a 15gig second hard drive as the slave drive. Two CD-Rom burners, one the secondard master and the other as the slave. I tried checking the cables they look like there are hooked up right. I also had windows 98 on my 15 gig hard drive but some how I lost 7.14gig of space after it formatted. Can I regain the lost space. What does the "Media Test", check cable mean.
