IIS Question

I am more an Apache guy (Windows and Unix) but this time I don't have a choice so here goes:

I have an asp app I copied to wwwroot\aspapp and when I go into the folder displays all the files in it, but when I click on the ASP file it gives me a 404 which I know is wrong. Scripts CAN execute, they have permission. Ideas?

Look at the logs and see what is 404ing. Not much to do with asp, something is calling a document that isnt there. If it was an execute permission problem it would be a 500 or a 403.

I actually searched my machine for the log files because I couldn't find them heh (they still didn't show up... but I'm using XP Pro so they're probably in some wierd spot)... But I also forgot that I ran the IIS lockdown tool (which I did when I set this machine up a month ago)... The problem viola:

Removed script map: .asp, C:\WINDOWS\System32\inetsrv\asp.dll
Removed script map: .cer, C:\WINDOWS\System32\inetsrv\asp.dll
Removed script map: .cdx, C:\WINDOWS\System32\inetsrv\asp.dll
Removed script map: .asa, C:\WINDOWS\System32\inetsrv\asp.dll
Removed script map: .asp, C:\WINDOWS\System32\inetsrv\asp.dll
Installed 404.dll to system32\inetsrv

C:\WINDOWS\system32\Logfiles\W3SVC1

Is where the logs are... and the file extention is not txt so that's why they didn't show up.

how are you trying to open the file. from IE did you enter

Sure did! I messed around with the settings more, but it seems IIS configuration can get ugly especially if you never did it before.

well, heres my 0.02 worth. create a new dir., dont use
wwwroot, its for default only and has screwy properties,
permissions, and redirects. the new dir can be under inetpub
or it can be virtual

I should have just made it a Virtual Directory to being with, but I didn't feel like setting one up. In any event I got it to work (finally) by rerunning the lock down tool and making a few manual changes. I am disappointed, however, that I changed the port number for IIS to 8080 and it hasn't changed from 80 (ie I edited the registry just like Microsoft said and it still listens on 80 even after a service stop/reboot)

heres my xp-erience from my w2k server class at college
(finals was 2 days ago). chapter 14 = iis. set up home directory
c:\inetpub\test2. setup document at the top of the list as
default.asp which is created and it runs fine when opened
from explorer, click on the file, "open with" IE.
now i go to IE, enter http://localhost:80
and what comes up? a different file, iisstart.asp.
wtf? neither the guy who sits next to me (a network admin)
nor the teacher, could fix it.
so you xperience not being able to set ports reminds me,
iis sux. time to learn apache, huh?
