Systems Canon i860 + Netgear PS110 print server = problem!

I am attempting to use a Netgear PS110 print server to share a new Canon i860 printer. I know the print server is good, because I'm replacing an existing HP printer. I also know the printer is good, because it works fine when connected directly to a PC.

However, whenever I try and print to the Canon printer through the print server, it will lay down one pixel's worth of ink and then advance to the next page. I have the same sypmtoms from two Win98 PCs and one WinXP PC. I've tried all the settings I can think about and I tried all of the troubleshooting suggestions from both the NetGear and Canon websites (i.e., killing bi-directional support) but to no avail.

I have also requested technical support from both companies. Canon has informed me that they don't support the i860 in a network environment, and they have no bright ideas. Netgear has proposed one solution (printing direct rather than using the queue), but that did not solve the problem.

Any recommendations?

Outdoors Re: Canon i860 + Netgear PS110 print server = problem!

I had the same problem with an old Intel Print Server.

Finally tweaked the settings and got it to work; but it is sloooow!
I've never seen a printer actually print this slow...not even an old dot matrix.

To get it to print correctly, use the following settings:

PRINT SERVER
- Set Bi-directional com ON
- Set the ps port to Software controlled
Example:
Port Status
Parallel Port 1
Port Speed: Software Controlled
Auto-Line Feed: Off
Bidi: Enabled but failed, check printer
Printer Status: Online
Active Service: None
PRINTER
- Set Bi-directional com ON
- Set Printer to Spool and Start printing immediately

Apparently, poor network communication is a design flaw:

Found this on Amazon:
"Unfortunately, Canon does not support the i860 printer when connected within a network environment because of possible communications issues. The i860 is a bi-directional printer but the bi-directional communications is not guaranteed to function when communicating through network components such as routers and print servers."

If you need help, send me an e-mail. I'm not a regular here.

Work Re: Canon i860 + Netgear PS110 print server = problem!

I take that back!

Upped the speed to medium and my jobs fly out of the printer!

Good luck!
