usually you hit the "del" key while booting....once youre in you just need to go to "standard cmos"...and make sure all 4 things are set to "auto"
by "all 4 things" I mean
primary master
primary slave
secondary master
secondary slave
depending on how he hooked it up it is probably the primary slave or secondary slave.
you probably already have the old hard drive listed as the primary master and probably your cdrom listed as secondary master....so you need to set "primary slave" and "secondary slave" to "auto" and see if it then detects the new drive...you have to hit "esc" to get off that screen and then "f10" to save and exit the bios altogether.
When its booting you can see if you look quickly, all the drives it detects...it probably will say "detecting ide drives" and it will list them in order same as the bios did.
If you set everything to "auto" and it still doesnt detect the new drive, then probably the jumpers need setting as I said earlier.
