wav files?

OK so I have some songs in wav and others in mp3 all in the same folder. I go to burn them And all I see is the mp3 files, the wav file are invisible. Should I somehow convert the wav to mp3's. so basicly the folder has the songs because I tested each one in my window media player. But the wav files are not there when veiwed through my burner.

Yep, use CDex...fast and easy.

Burn your mp3's to make audio discs...they will be converted "on the fly", so no need to mess with bulky wav files.

What program are you using to burn your discs?

BTW, Welcome to TechIMO!!!

the burner doesn't show them because it's probably set to only display files that are mp3s. like when you go to open a file in any program and there is a drop down thats called files of type it will only display those files (and folders)

I have an external hp burner cd4e series. window Media player is my player. The thing is the wav files were once mp3 files. What happen was I burnt them lost the files on the computor so I had to retreive them back from the cd. When I take them back they also lose the titles of all the songs. The title thing I can live with.

I think I still need to understand the file fundamentals. such as knowing how to use the differnt files and when they can or can not be applied.

Get those poor files out of wma format. Almost no support for them outside of ms.

Info on audio formats ?

WAV is an uncompressed format. Large files with no loss in quality. Basic audio format. About 10 mb per minute of audio. About 80mb per song. *ALL* audio programs support them.

MP3s are the most common lossy compression format. Usually about 1/20 of the original WAV. Variable file size depending on compression. This is the format in wich audio is found on dvds and divx's.Usualy 128bit per second. About 5 mb per song.

WMA propriatery microsoft audio format. Dont know much about them. Usually not supported by software other than ms (altho I think winamp plays 'em).

This is the deal. To burn audio onto a cd so that a cd player can use it a file must be in WAV format. The burner proggy your using can uncompress mp3 files into wavs and burn them as such. This is a little misleading tho. You cant just burn a cd with wavs and have it play proper in a cd player. It needs to be burned in a special way so as to be recognized as a regular audio cd. This is why when you explore and audio cds you get those small files that arnt actually songs. This is also the reason you cant save filenames on an audio cd.

You dont really need more than WAVs and MP3 for basic stuff, and there are a lot of proggys for conversion from one format into the other.

Hope this helps.

Sorry if Im a little hard to understand but thats the gist of it.

thanks elm

I have a better understanding. I can say wma sucks, In my conclusion from that information. So when I took music out of my cd it was in wma because I used Windows media, Is that right? If I used another player to take music off a cd it may come out in something else, but something more usefull then Windows. So maybe I should use real player or something like that. How I am I doing so far for a newbe?

Real player (.ra) is another format not commonly used by most applications. Youd get the same problem with it.

I cant seem to find a free mp3 encoder/cd ripper. I use audiograbber and it works fine, but you have to buy it.

edit: Found CDex on download.com you might want to try it, just remember that .ra .wma ... are not as universaly supported as .mp3.

edit #2: Just realized that martoch recommended CDex. /feels stupid/

Windows Media Player automatically converts all mp3s to wavs before burning into them a cd.
