How can I make VCDs play in Windows XP?

Hello everyone!

I am new here and also relatively new to the computer world. I used to have Windows 98 on my computer and just recently I got Windows XP. Now with Win XP I can no longer play VCDs. They just won't open in any players But when I boot in Win 98, they play just fine! When I copy them to my hard disk from Win98, they play in when I boot in Win XP! I am so lost! But in WinXP I can't even copy them to my hard disk! It's as if WinXP doesn't recognise VCDS. It's very annoying.

Anyone has come across this and solve it? Please help me

Thanks a lot in advance

You should be able to just drag the .dat file in the mpegav folder to the screen and they should play.

Thanks for replying but nothing is working! When I use Win98, everything is fine, but I can't open any Video CD in XP! Is there something that was wrongly installed when XP was installed?

They should play better in XP than in W98! Actually, it's the same media player. Are you trying factory OEMs or some copycats or do it yourself VCDs?

Even if it won't play in vcd mode, you can still just view the main DAT file manually and it'll work.

browse the CD and find the main DAT file. It'll be a large file, about the size of the CD space usually. That file, usually named something like AVSEQ01.DAT, is really just an .MPG file. Drag and drop that file on to a media player. That's it.

The VCD is good quality. As I said when I open it in Win 98, it plays without any problem. When I try to open it in XP, it says something like this " The file cannot be played. It is either corrupt or the player does not support the format you are trying to play " Yet it plays without any problem in 98, on the same PC. Does it have something to do with XP's initial installation?

Thanks again for your replies

Are you sure it's not an SVCD? It would be MPEG2 if it was so you'd need something like PowerDVD to make the video play.

If it's an SVCD, will it still play in Win98? All my VCDS play in all the players I have in Win98... But nothing in XP! and it is the same computer

You can always use ISObuster to open up the Cd and extract the .dat file as an Mpeg. Sometimes they give me trouble too and ISObuster will extract the DAT file as a useable Mpeg. Rightclick the dat file in ISOBuster and then select Extract as RAW then convert to useable file Make sure you have the right codecs just to be safe. It is possible that your 98 box has a Mpeg2 codec without DVD Software. I personally like the K-Lite codec pack, after installing it I havent run into a format I cant play yet
