Proxy server speed up internet?

Whenever i use bittorent to download a file, it really bogs down my internet as many people are using up all of my upload bandwidth. If I setup a proxy server on my home netowrk, will going to web sites work a little faster since the server will keep a bigger cache where you have been then your machines local cache?

Thanks,
-Biz

It may help a bit, but not alot. If you are starved for bandwidth, then the only thing a proxy will help is cachable items, which all depend on how the page is written and the proxy is configured. You can get a 30-40% cache hit ratio, but your browser can do most of that on its own for one user. The big advantage is when you have 1000 people going to CNN.com or somthing popular.
