Why use DVDshrink?

If I buy a DVD movie, a DVD burner, and a blank DVD-R disk, why can't I just copy it from one to the other?

Now, I don't have any of the required hardware, but I just haven't understood why people use programs like DVDshrink.

Does DVDShrink actually compress it, or is that just the name of the program? If it's just the name, I feel stupid.

From Article:

"This first article will talk about the simplest way to get a movie onto a DVD-R that will play on almost any DVD player. The second article will go more in-depth with the backup process and will talk about how to get the best compression on the movie so you can obtain the best quality possible."

What is the difference?

The reason for programs like dvdshrink is, that most movies are mastered on 9,4gb dvd-r discs. Consumer level dvd-r are 4,7gb. So, if the movie (with all the extra stuff, or even without) is 6gb, you need to re-encode it to fit on a 4,7gb media.

I haven't read the articles, so I'll guess
The first article discusses dvd's that are singlelayer (meaning, they will fit without re-encode to a 4,7gb disc). And the second article discusses how to re-endoce duallayer discs that are more than 4,7gb in size.

The encryption CSS and another prevent you from just copying a VOB from one DVD to another. DVDshrink and other tools remove the protection. It also can force a DVD to fit in the confinds of a Single DVD R if you wish

double sided. Meaning you burn one side... flip it... burn another... DVD Article 3 Goes over all the types of media and what their limitations are and drawbacks. Waiting for Robrich to be able to clean up my errors and post it should be soon
