Freevo (TIVO)

http://freevo.sourceforge.net/

I found this the other day and wanted to share it with everyone. Ive got it running under slackware 9.1. The xmltv program (thats the one that gets the list of whats on TV) was a pain in the @$$ to install but I found a tutorial here:

I should mention that if you have a DVD drive that you can easily play DVDs. Also you can play music CDs, play video files on your local disk, and play mp3's and oggs too.

Freevo is a nice program, but I found that I liked mythtv better.

http://www.mythtv.org

To me both programs are EXTREMELY polished and work EXTREMELY well for being open source, non commercial sponsered linux projects, especially for their age! (Neither is very old) This is a great thing to see IMO.

It's good to see you're using open source software, but I am a bit dismayed by the fact you say "work EXTREMELY well for being open source".... Do you know that DNS and BIND (two open source projects) are two tools that practically run the internet? Without them where would your DNS be :-p Second, AMP ( Apache, MySQL and PHP) all open source tools RUN this very board you're typing on! Plus companies like yahoo are using PHP everyday! (Just so you know, this is NOT intended to be a flame or anything, just wanted to let you know a little more )

I am well aware of all of those, and they fit into be "with" category above. All of those are VERY large scale projects that receives major backing corporate and non-corporate alike.

Unfortunately most linux programs do not receive this major backing, and do not have the luxury of large teams of developers as these projects do. Thus what you are left with in the end often consists of programs that work. Not much time is taken to truely refine the interface and install to top notch standards, let alone so quickly as these projects have attained it. Another thing about all the projects listed above, how old are they? You answer is quite old

Open source has yeiled a great many wonderful programs that rival the best software ever written. However most consumer apps written by small teams, that are not that old do not by any means rival it at all. Myth and Freevo are quite the exception in this case and show great matuity for their age.

Not that I can tell. It requires a lot of *nix stuff to run anyway. I know mysql can be installed on windows but for this thing to run someone would have to port it over.
