scan disk problems

Hi folks,

Im working on a friends computer and im trying to scan disk (and defrag) but when I do a "thorough" test it doesnt complete. It keeps restarting scan disk over and over. I have turned off the screen saver and also closed all programs believed to be running. (ctrl-alt-delete) But scan disk only goes so far then it restarts again. Any suggestions?
He has a HP pavillion computer, running windows ME.
64mb ram
30gig HD

Thanks

If all you have running in Task Manager is Explorer and Systray and the screensaver is off then I would try running it in safe mode.

I am also having the same problem with running scan disk. Can someone let me know if running in safe mode helped. I've never did the safe mode thing so haven't a clue how to do it. When I first turn on my computer do I press f8 to get it in safe mode? Then what do I do and how do I get out of safe mode? I didn't always have this problem with scan disk. It only started lately. I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

pressing "f8" gets you to the start menu for windows. Then select "safe mode". windows will start with minimum drivers. Then follow the same steps that you would normally. Afterwards reboot. If the start menu comes up again , select normal startup. everything should be back to " normal".

A couple of times my defrag would keep restarting when I had my cat5 ethernet cable plugged in...I unplugged it from the comp and defrag finished normally....it doesnt always do that but it could be that.

Also, not everything that is running will show in "ctrl-alt-delete"

I would POSSIBLY consider running "adaware 6"..the free spyware cleaner... www.lavasoftusa.com just in case there is junk like trojan horse programs running that are causing activity and making it restart scandisk.

also, for safe mode....I think you can just press f5 when booting...press it over and over, dont press and hold down....(or press f8 and then choose "safe mode..either way works)

when you reboot from safe mode it will start notmally next time.

I didn't know this thread existed. I replied to Margie54's thread and gave some additional suggestions (or alternatives) to starting in safe mode.
