most pc manufacturers ive seen throw the "copy" of xp they get on a partition of the main drive.

I've seen that as well, Jokostel. Some even have the foresight to install the recovery console as a boot option. Would be nice if this was one of those times...
On that train of thought: VH5150-what size does your hard drive report?

I gave up and reistalled

everything from the recovery disk. I lost some work buy at least I am starting from a clean slate. Anybody know the best free pop-up buster program?

The only thing I could really do

from it was completely restore, otherwise it was useless for repair. In the end that is what I ended up doing. It allowed you to make boot disks and such, but nothing to repair a damaged registry. Thanks for all your help Bill.
