266 RAM with 333 processor?

I'm thinking of getting a client a Epox EP-8KRA2I (KT 600 chipset) with a AMD XP 2500+ Barton. He already has 768MB DDR 266, would it work with this 333Mhz bus processor? Just been so long since I've built an AMD system...

Ordering as soon as I get a reply from you guys... so any quick advice is appreciated!

Thanks,

-Chris

Wouldn't you be overclocing the RAM? For stability, you would might have to run the CPU @ 133FSB, instead of 166.
Some boards allow you to clock the RAM different from the CPU. You could do like I do, take the RAM as a trade in and get them DDR333. Just a suggestion.

Well if he clocks the cpu at 133mhz, it wont be running at an athlon XP 2500+. Instead you'll end up with a slower computer running at around an athlon 1ghz, yes actual megahertz will be significantly slower so the cpu has to be at 166mhz. You can run the CPU at 166mhz, and the ram at 133mhz. just clock down the memory frequency to 266mhz.

Ya i'd go with the DDR333 in that case. Thanks for the recommendations!

Some boards / chipsets can run the RAM asynchronously at FSB333, DDR266. I'm pretty sure KT600 CANNOT do this at FSB400 / DDR333, but it can do it at DDR266 / FSB333. So this wouldn't have to be an issue assuming your manufacturer enables the option in BIOS.

Also, bear in mind that if its good RAM it may be up to it anyway. I have some PC100 that would happily run at 142mhz and I've got some crucial PC133 that's been up to 166mhz.

The cpu would be running at 166fsb..the memory he already has would want to run at 133fsb....as dpu said, usually you can run the ram at a slower speed than the fsb,,,the bioses nowadays have sooooo many options....I doubt there would be a major difference performance wise if you ran the memory at the slower speed.

To be sure you could dl the manual from epox..I tried but it seemed to be taking forever (typical weird pdf downloads)

Ok, I got the manual dl'ed, lol.....says on page 3-5 "when fsb is 266/333/400 ..DDR 266/333/400 are supported"

That sounds to me like it is saying it has several options as far as fsb/mem speed is concerned and that dudes RAM will probably work fine.

a pic of the bios page from a review of an 8KRA2+. Closest review I could find, lol.

------>page 4-25 dram clock can be set to spd,100mhz, 133,166, 200

You guys are awesome. He ended up getting the Epox nForce2 EP-8RDA3G. Looks like a very nice board. He's going to stick with his current XP 1700+ and 768MB PC2100 RAM. He'll upgrade to a XP 2500+ lata he says, which at that point I'd get him DDR 400.

He also got a new WD 80GB HD (old 60GB Deskstar quit on him) and a LG 4040B DVD Burner. Should be a pretty nice setup when he gets all done.

Thanks again,

-Chris

pc2100 you mean if it was pc2700 then there wouldn't be a problem with 333mhz ram.
