now i am confused...please help..

hi,
i am looking forward to buying a graphic card but it is getting really confusing for me. i went to the store and they said nvidia is better than ati radeon. i read on this forum atis are better so i couldnt decide. then i saw so many types the xt , the pro and got really confused. the one i thought ok to be was ati radeon 9600 xt but i had heard it had poor benchmarks so i just came back thinking i will ask here and then go ahead and buy it .

ok now are really nvidias better than atis

secondly i have a budget of around 150 for a good card to play games and watch movies through my pc to my tv. i can go another 30 bucks (but 150 is better ) more to the maximum budget i guess but now i dont kow which is the best card to go after for that price and which one to get. which is the best nvidia or ati and if ati which one out of them and what is xt over a pro mean ...what a mess
please help me if anyone can, so that i can go and buy my graphic card as soon as possible to excited about it i guess

oh i am using 4x agp p4 2.6 GH, xp home, asus motherboard..did i leave something out...guess not
thanks,
miracle

ATI's have pulled ahead in the last 18 months or so....as far as models, I have no clue because, you are right...the naming system is totally asanine and incomprehensible.

People at the store dont know what they are talking about. For that budget, get a Radeon 9600 or 9600XT. The difference between them? The XT comes with a coupon for HL2 and is clocked slightly higher.

Well there are fans of both ati and nvidia, many will say ati is much better, yet you wouldn't be sad going with either, depending on what you need. For instance, maybe you need an entry level card or a midrange or high end, all depening on what you need.

The radeon 9600 xt is quite a good midrange, unless your an avid gamer.

I would recommend the geforce FX 5700 as you can find it within your budget and it's a pretty darn good performer

I would go for the Radeon. Better RAM performance in 3d. However, NVIDIA has better 2D performance... IMO

I still say go for the radeon. It's older the brother, the 9700Pro (I currently have) is completely blowing away the high-end nvidia cards in my apartment right now. They even have faster processors.

ATI's got the better goods right now. Hands down. Oh, and an extra feature, although it might not mean anything to you, is an ATI card with two display outputs has support for a dual display, while with nvidia cards, this tends not to be the case.
