Outdoors VKD error on startup

Okay.... here is the problem.

I have ONE computer that is M$ win98se in the house... and that is my daughters.

I have NO idea what she downloaded recently or if it even pertains to the problem, but now Windows won't load and I keep getting a vkd error.......... which i've tracked down... and the only thing I get is a "could be a keyboard problem" ....... i changed the keyboard.......... still the same error.

She has stuff on her system she needs.... book reports etc... (i may use knoppix and move the files off to another computer.)

Any ideas ............ short of a complete reinstall ?? (Reinstall isn't a big deal....... i just haven't ran into this error before)

Can you get in via Safe Mode?

If so, try that and remove the keyboard from Device Mangler and reboot.

Are you sure it's VKD and not VXD? I've never heard of VKD, but that doesn't mean anything.

No........ no safe mode either...

I was able to boot knoppix and get some of her files....... but she wants to save 1.1 gig worth of data she has.........

Soooo ...... I'm back to square one. What can I do short of wiping the drive and doing a complete reinstall ? Just try to reinstall windows without wiping the drive ??

Try reinstalling over the old. It's not pretty but at least you can get to her stuff again. You'll have to reload all apps and stuff if you wanna keep it that way.
I'd recommend getting the data you want, then wiping and reinstalling clean.

Yeah..... figured that would be best too....

I don't think I have an easy way to get the data, but I might be able to use knoppix and use lin-neighborhood to move everything to another drive. Might try that tonight. With Knoppix I can get the data, but it's a pain.

Thanks.
