This is only partly correct. The RAM does not 'clock down',
ever..it is the slower RAM that will not "clock up" is the limiting factor. The faster RAM just sits there idling along at some lower FSB than its capable of running..which is just fine..unless the user will overclock the system..then, there will be a problem.
All RAM that I am aware of is backward compatible with its slower brethren..its the system it is placed in that determines if it will work.
The other differences will be, ECC and/or Registered type modules. Just about all motherboards used for home or small office use will use the unbuffered, non parity type RAM.
